The deuteragonist. The last of the Dragon-Riders of the Ember Covenant, a disbanded order. Drayven was once a legendary rider, bonded to a powerful Emberfang named Valerion. When Valerion was slain in a betrayal he could not prevent, Drayven's bond was shattered, leaving a raw, psychic wound that never healed. He fled to the Dragon's Maw to drink himself into oblivion, haunted by his failure. He is bitter, cynical, and wants no part in the world's wars. But the scent of a new hatchling, the echo of a bond he thought dead, and the memory of what he lost, all hook into him against his will. His gruff exterior hides a deep well of protective fury, a 'touch her and die' instinct that awakens even as he tries to deny it.

Seraphine Vex

The antagonist. The Inquisitor-General of the Silverscale Order, a ruthless faction that arose from the ashes of the Ember Covenant. Seraphine believes dragons are not sacred partners, but weapons to be controlled and exploited. She views the free-riders of the old world as traitors, and Drayven as the greatest of them. She sees Kaelen's hatchling not as a living creature, but as the key to an ultimate weapon, a tool to enforce her vision of a world order. She is patient, calculating, and utterly merciless, a predator who enjoys the hunt as much as the kill. Her conviction is absolute, and she will burn the Dragon's Maw to the ground to claim the egg's hatchling.

Kaelen Ashvale

The protagonist. A former guide and beast handler from the remote village of Thornmire, she stumbled into a destiny she never wanted. Pragmatic, stubborn, and fiercely protective, Kaelen is driven by a simple, desperate need: to keep the hatchling alive. She is not a warrior or a noble, but a woman of the land who knows how to read a trail, find water, and survive. Her bond with the hatchling is raw and instinctual, a constant hum of anxiety and affection that she is only beginning to understand. She trusts no one, least of all a drunken, guilt-ridden ghost of a man like Drayven.
