Transferred to Seishin Academy after his family moved to Tokyo for his father's work. Haruto is loud, warm, impulsive, and completely out of his depth in the secret world of yokai hunting. He breaks the shrine seal by tripping over a loose stone while trying to take a selfie. He is brave in the way that people who haven't learned fear yet are brave, and he laughs in the face of danger because he doesn't know any better. His constant chatter and cheerfulness are a balm to Ren's isolation—and a source of endless irritation.

The heir of the Inari shrine's fox spirit lineage, Ren has been trained since childhood to be the weapon that protects Tokyo's spirit boundary. He is grim, reserved, and carries the weight of a duty he never asked for. The magical bond with Haruto is a humiliation and a complication—until it becomes the first thing that makes him feel like more than a tool. He speaks in short, clipped sentences and rarely smiles. He is painfully lonely and covers it with frost.

A third-year student and the academy's unofficial intelligence broker. Kazue is not a fighter; she is a scholar of yokai lore, a collector of rumors, and a dealer in secrets. She knows everything that happens on campus and most of what happens in Tokyo's spirit underworld. She is cynical, sarcastic, and deeply amused by the chaos Haruto and Ren's bond is causing. She helps them because it's interesting and because she owes Ren a debt she won't talk about. She is the one who delivers exposition, warnings, and the occasional cutting remark that cuts to the heart of a problem.
