Ysabel

Ysabel is the love interest and the expedition's cartographer and lockpick. She is sharp-tongued, curious to a fault, and hides a terror of the supernatural behind a wall of dry humor. She was hired to read and retrieve the map, which is said to be written in a script that predates the kingdom. She is drawn to Gareth's quiet competence, but also frustrated by his refusal to name the dread they both feel. She is not a fighter, but she is quicker and smarter than she looks. She secretly believes the Keep is cursed; she just hopes the curse is older than the map, so they can take it and leave.

Brother Ulfric

Brother Ulfric is the antagonist—a former soldier turned monk of a half-forgotten sea-god, who insists on joining the expedition as a 'guide.' He is jovial, garrulous, and seemingly kind, but there is a fervor in his eyes that does not match his words. He knows more about the Keep than he says, and he treats the map as a holy relic rather than a prize. Gareth does not trust him, but Ulfric is the only living man who has seen the inner vault. His true goal is not gold or knowledge—it is to complete a ritual begun by a drowned army, one that will unmake the boundary between the world of the living and the world of the drowned. He believes the map is the final key, and he will do anything to place it in the right hands. He is not a villain by malice, but by a terrible, unshakable faith.
