Ryōko is the handler and tactical coordinator of the Phantom Unit's Tokyo division, a woman who has seen too much to be impressed by anything anymore. She's blunt to the point of rudeness, unsentimental, and fiercely protective of her agents in her own gruff way. She was once a promising field operative until a yokai attack left her with a punctured lung and a desk job. She knows more about Shin's true history than anyone alive, but she has never once let on, respecting the weight of his silence. She has a dry, sardonic sense of humor and a terrible habit of forgetting that other people don't have her encyclopedic knowledge of spirit lore. She picked Aoi for the Unit because she saw in him the same stubborn compassion that got her nearly killed—and she hopes he'll prove smarter about it than she was.
