The season, in short

On a cold night in November 1983, twelve-year-old Will Byers rides home through the woods called Mirkwood and disappears between one streetlight and the next. What looks like a missing-kid case pulls four very different people toward the same locked door: his friends, his mother, the town's hungover chief, and a girl who escaped the lab that opened it.

1

The boy on the road

Will pedals home alone. Something faceless is standing in the road. The bike is found; the boy isn't. Up the hill, Hawkins Lab turns off its lights and says nothing.

2

The girl from the lab

Searching for Will, the boys find a girl instead — shaved head, a number tattooed on her arm. Eleven bends spoons with her mind, and flinches at the men hunting her.

3

Joyce and the lights

Joyce hears Will through the walls and builds an alphabet out of Christmas lights to talk back. Hopper digs into the lab's lie. A body is pulled from the quarry — and it's a fake.

4

The Gate & the thing

Eleven shows them the Upside Down and the faceless predator that took Will. In the school showdown she tears the monster apart — and vanishes with it. Will is pulled back. Not all the way.

The thing the season turns on

The Gate — a tear into the Upside Down, ripped open by the lab's experiments on Eleven. Through it came the Demogorgon, a faceless predator that hunts by blood. The whole season is the town learning the door exists — and that it doesn't fully shut.

The Upside Down — Hawkins' rotting mirror, cold and lightless. Everything to come leaks out of here.

Where Season One leaves the world

Will's home for Christmas — but he coughs a slug into the sink and sees the other place flicker behind the bathroom mirror. Eleven is gone, maybe dead. Hopper climbs into a government car, then leaves Eggos in a box in the woods. The Gate was closed. It was never sealed.

Canon is read-only — you can't rewrite it, only spin a what-if from it. The point where readers continue the story forward opens at the end of Season 5.
