A year and a half after the rifts, Hawkins is a fenced military zone living under the lie of a 'hazardous earthquake.' Vecna went quiet to heal; the survivors haven't. With Max still trapped between alive and gone and the gates never sealed, the party stops waiting for the next death and goes hunting — back into the Upside Down, after the first child, to finish it or be finished.
Hawkins is sealed under martial law and a cover story no one believes. The rifts breathe in the dark. The hunt for the missing — and for whoever the government calls a terrorist — narrows on the kids who already know what's really down there.
Will was the first taken, the first worn, the first to feel the cold turn its head. As Vecna stirs, that old connection wakes with him — and the thing that has used Will since 1983 becomes the way back in, and the way to be found.
No more waiting to be cursed. Eleven trains to face the one being made of the same stuff she is. The party splits across Hawkins and the Upside Down to find Vecna's body, reach Max where she's held, and close the doors for good.
The last stand is paid for in full. The gates are sealed, the architect ended, and what's left of Hawkins climbs back into daylight — scarred, fewer, free. Canon stops here. The town it leaves behind is yours to carry on.
