The season, in short

Split three ways — a scattered Hawkins, a sun-bleached California exile, and a frozen Russian prison — the season opens on a murder no one living can see. Teenagers die where they stand, minds taken first. The trail runs backward through the lab to a name everyone buried: Henry Creel, the first child, the massacre Eleven was raised to believe she caused.

1

The curse

Chrissy dies standing up — eyes lifting, bones folding — while no one but the dead can see what holds her. Then Fred. Then Patrick. Each heard a grandfather clock that isn't there, and each carried something they couldn't set down.

2

The song

Vecna comes for Max, who's been writing letters to a grave. What pulls her back isn't a weapon — it's a song loud enough to find her way home through. Once. He doesn't make that mistake twice.

3

The first one

The trail runs back to Henry Creel — orderly One, the boy who killed the children at the lab. Eleven didn't kill him; she tore a door in the air and threw him through it. He's been building the Upside Down out of that grudge ever since.

4

Four gates

Eddie plays a guitar solo to buy the plan time, and dies for a town that already hates him. The plan fails. Vecna lives. Four gates tear Hawkins open at once, the ground splits, and the sky goes red over a town still calling it an earthquake.

The thing the season turns on

Vecna — not a new monster but the oldest one. Henry Creel, the lab's number One, the massacre El was blamed for as a child. When she threw him through the first gate she didn't end him — she made him.

The origin — he is the mind behind the Mind Flayer, the source of the Demogorgon, the architect of every door. And now, from inside the Upside Down still frozen on November 6th 1983, he's torn four gates at once.

Where Season Four leaves the world

Vecna's wounded, not dead. Four gates stay torn open and meet in the air over Hawkins; the cold pours through. Max's heart stopped and started — she's alive, blind, and somewhere none of them can reach. Ash falls on the basketball court like snow. The survivors stand in the ruin and breathe.

Canon is read-only — you can't rewrite it, only spin a what-if from it. The point where readers continue the story forward opens at the end of Season 5.
